The Topo Ultraventure 5 is the trail shoe we recommend when the plan is simply "long". It's Topo Athletic's best-selling trail model, now in its fifth generation, and it does exactly what a long-distance trail shoe should: soft, generous cushioning, reliable grip and enough room in the forefoot that your toes are still happy after hours on the move.

Underfoot you get Topo's reworked ZipFoam™ midsole with a 35 mm heel and 30 mm forefoot stack. It's a forgiving, comfortable ride that takes the sting out of rooty paths, gravel roads and the tarmac stretches that link trails together. The 5 mm drop sits in a sweet spot – low enough for a natural stride, but without the calf load of a zero-drop shoe.

Grip comes from a Vibram® XS Trek outsole with a lug pattern built for mixed terrain rather than deep mud. That makes the Ultraventure 5 a genuinely versatile shoe: it's as comfortable on forest trails and park paths as it is on gravel and short road sections.

The biggest updates are up top. A new tightly woven mesh upper is more durable while still breathing well, and extra padding around the heel collar and tongue makes the fit noticeably plusher. Topo has also added a universal gaiter attachment at the heel – a small detail you'll appreciate on dusty summer trails and snowy winter runs.

What's new in the Topo Ultraventure 5 compared with the Ultraventure 4?
The stack height, 5 mm drop and Vibram® XS Trek outsole carry over. New for version 5 are a tightly woven mesh upper, extra padding around the heel and tongue, a universal gaiter attachment and a reworked ZipFoam™ midsole. It's slightly heavier than its predecessor (about 10.7 oz versus 10.4 oz in a US 9).

Is the Ultraventure 5 good for hiking?
Yes. The combination of cushioning, Vibram grip and a roomy toe box makes it a great choice if you prefer hiking in low, light shoes rather than boots.

Does the Ultraventure 5 have a rock plate?
No. Protection comes from the thick ZipFoam™ midsole. For very rocky, technical terrain, a shoe with a rock plate may suit you better.

How does the Topo Ultraventure 5 fit?
Topo uses US sizing. If you're between two sizes, Topo recommends going up half a size. The toe box is wide, while the midfoot and heel have a standard, secure fit.
