      How should I choose rainwear?

Think about what you want out of the rainwear. In addition to staying dry from the rain, what should your rainwear look like? Do you prefer a short or long jacket? What color do you want for your rainwear? Do you need rain pants or is a top enough? If you are going to buy rainwear for your child who is out playing in all weathers, there may be completely different things you need to look at. If you are out walking in the woods and fields with the dog, for example, you probably need a warm rain gear that is durable because you will most likely bump into bushes, trees and walk in tall grass. If you live in the city and need something that protects you to and from the subway, you may prefer a stylish raincoat that matches your everyday outfit, so then the design must be in focus.

Should I choose lined or unlined rainwear for my child?

There are both lined and unlined rainwear. There are pros and cons to both variants. Advantages of lined rainwear (often gallons) is that it is a flexible garment that the child can often have only ordinary garments under, so you do not have to think layer upon layer with such models. It is easy to care for, durable and keeps the baby both warm and dry. The disadvantage may be that the lined rainwear is not so easy to "make cooler", if you want that variation, it may be better to choose unlined rainwear and instead think layer upon layer principle with, for example, fleece clothing between the rainwear and the child's regular clothes. The child can wear unlined rainwear as it is in the summer without having to think about more clothes. The same, of course, applies to lined and unlined rainwear for adults.

      Waterproofness on rainwear

There are various waterproof or water-repellent materials on rainwear, such as gallons, polyester and polyurethane (also called PU). Different materials hold differently tightly and ventilate differently. Therefore, think about what you should do in your rainwear. Is it strenuous physical activity or a leisurely walk to the bus from time to time? There are both lined and unlined rainwear, so you can wear the rainwear at different temperatures. When you measure the water tightness of a garment, you are talking about water column pressure. This means that you have measured the amount of water in millimeters, which one square centimeter of the material can hold out per hour before you get wet. So: the higher the water column pressure, the more water your rainwear can withstand.

Table: This is how the water column pressure is measured

      • 2,000 mm: Not waterproof, with water repellent
      • 4,000 mm: For short walks in light rain
      • 6,000 mm: Too heavy rain for a short period, or light rain for a long time
      • 8,000 - 12,000 mm: Heavy rain for a few hours and a little rain for a very long time
      • Over 12,000 mm: Too much heavy rain for a long time

      Breathability on rainwear

It's not just the waterproofness you need to keep in mind when getting rainwear. Rainwear also has different breathability. If you are active in your rainwear, you have probably experienced that you feel sticky and wet as soon as you move. This is because the garments do not breathe and therefore the heat stays in the garments and makes you wet. To avoid the "greenhouse effect" inside the rainwear, you can choose a material that can breathe and can dissipate the heat that your body produces. This can be done either by the jacket, for example, being made of breathable materials that you have in, for example, ski jackets or by having ventilation openings so that the warm air can get away from the body. When you buy your rainwear, you can check what it means for breathability. Below is an anfing ability table.

      Table: Breathability is measured

      • 1,000 - 3,000 g / m2 / day: Short walks
      • 3,000 - 5,000 g / m2 / day: Longer walks of 2 to 5 kilometers
      • 8,000 g / m2 / day: Easy running round or 3 to 5 kilometers bike ride
      • 10,000 g / m2 / day: Running round at a normal pace and longer bike rides
      • Over 10,000 g / m2 / day: Very active use

      Can I impregnate rainwear?

Yes you can do that. Like all other garments, rainwear becomes less and less water-repellent the more you wear them. You can buy impregnation and impregnate your rainwear about once a year. Make sure the rainwear is dry before.

Can I wash rainwear in the washing machine?

Yes you can. First of all, you can try to manually rub away any stains. Do not use detergents with solvents as this may impair impregnation. After the clothes have been washed and cleaned, they can be re-impregnated. Take care of your rainwear and they will last longer. Do not wash them unnecessarily, both for the garment and for the environment. Always follow the washing instructions on the garment. Rinse aid can have a negative effect on the water-repellent properties of certain materials. Wash clothes with the wrong side out. Never leave washed garments in the washing machine, but take them out and hang them up at once.

Can I dry rainwear in drying cabinets?

Some rainwear should not be tumble dried as it wears out the functions of the garment unnecessarily. Read the washing instructions on the garments. Drying rainwear in drying cabinets is generally not recommended as drying cabinets tend to have a very high temperature. Some materials can crack at too high temperatures, especially gallon clothing. Galon is a 100 percent waterproof and windproof material and needs no impregnation or finishing to maintain its waterproofness. If the gallon clothes get dirty, just wipe them off. Turn the rainwear inside out if it is wet and it will dry faster.
